Why can it not work with the configuration that is handed to it on a silver 
platter via the modprobe.conf entries posted earlier?

No, a garage floor, and another slab in front it & the house that was busted 
up pretty bad & sinking like the Titanic.  I've built the garage with only a 
few hours help from one of the neighbors since about the tail end of June.  
The slab in front was 6 yards, the garage floor was 7.
