I remember reading a post on this topic a while back; IIRC the trick in gnome is to enable software sound mixing (System->Preferences->Hardware->Sound, under the Sounds tab, tick the checkbox). This would start the ESD daemon on a non-pulseaudio system; on F8 (and F9, I believe) /usr/bin/esd is actually a link to /usr/bin/esdcompat, which is a shell script that starts the pulseaudio daemon.
