greetings,

during startup of kde under f8-dvd.i386, i receive following error messages;

++++++
app: = evolution-alarm
app: = nm-applet
- ------
an error occurred while loading or saving
configuration information for
  [insert app name here].
some of your configuration settings may
not work properly.

Failed to contact configuration server;
some possible causes are that you need
to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit,
or you have stale NFS locks due to a
system crash. See
   http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/
 for information.

(Details -
  1: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-geo/lock/ior'
   not opened successfully, no gconfd
   located: No such file or directory
  2: Failed to convert IOR ''
   to an object reference)
++++++

this only occurs when i boot with eth0 disconnected.

easy solution, do not boot with eth0 disconnected.

confusing solution, where do i make changes to disable eth0 from connecting to
dsl modem during boot so that users may start and stop internet connection???

i have tried some changes to 'services', but, as yet, not correct ones.

also, just which services should be disabled to have a 'stand alone' system.
that is, _all_ unneeded networking features '=off', internet '=on demand'?

f8 has come a long way from fc3, and i am glad to see it. just taking a little
time to grasp how things are being done now.

tia.
