I recently reinstalled Fedora 8 and went thru this. I have no problems with 
mplayer (it plays everything!).  I just grabbed the codecs file from:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html#binary_codecs

...then unpacked it on /usr/lib/codecs without any problem. 

Just make sure you unpack the individual files (dll's...etc) on that same 
directory. When you unpack that it will create a directory..just move the 
files there to /usr/lib/codecs

Anyway, I never heard of any "rmvb" files? Are there REal Media (.rm) files? 
Please post the output when you play the file from the command-line.

I don't know what's the difference. You should get them straight from the 
source (the link I provided you).
