Hi,

Using compiz causes the fan on my Nvidia cards to operate.  I leave
compiz turned off - it sometimes interferes with other 3D apps like
GoogleEarth, Bleander, etc(all of which also cause the fan to come
on).  In my experience, anything that is graphics intensive - and
relies on hardware acceleration - will cause the fan to operate.
