Do you have any other network interfaces? You might want to check 
the default route to make sure it is through the PPP interface when 
dialup is active. If you have a default route set, then it is 
probably not going to be changed when the PPP connection comes up. I 
know that used to be the case, but I have not checked it in the last 
couple of versions. (I don't use dialup often.)

If you can ping by IP address, but not host name, then check 
/etc/resolv.conf to make sure the name servers are being updated.
