It's not that every package has a requirement on grep (or on
/bin/grep).  It's just that a few core packages require it and that
works it's way up the dep chain.

Just because the grep package installed on F8 has .fc7 in it doesn't
mean that it's cruft.  There are plenty of packages that have not
required a rebuild since F7 (and even some since FC6)[1].

You shouldn't remove packages simply based on .fc[67] being in the rpm
file name.

[1] I get 1026 running: repoquery -a | grep -c '\.fc[67]\.'
    (Out of 10025 returned by: repoquery -a | wc -l)
