Thanks Rex, good to know. Unfortunaltely either requires a download of 250 Meg. I have a Werewolf DVD and a 5-CD set. Is there a way to use them to install them? I live out in the sticks and only have Wild-Blue Satellite (not very) broadband.

I'm very skeptical of trying the download with the above commands, because according to the synaptic package manager, I have a broken package that prevents installation of kdebase, and it can't fix.

I was installing this distro from the DVD on a WD Passport backup drive of my Centrino laptop and I chose the "customize now" option instead of "customize later"  Actually, this installation went to apparent completion, but at the end, I got the following message: "An error occurred unmounting the disk. Please make sure you're not accessing /mnt/source from the shell and then click OK to retry". Of course I clicked OK ad nauseum, with the error message repeating each time. I finally had no choice but to reboot. Yet this aborted the final part of the installation which was to configure the GRUB dual boot with WinXP. So the installation on the WD Passport was useless (and maybe dangerous).

As it was late in the evening then, I decided to reinstall with the "customize later" standard installation. I subsequently noticed that the progress bar on the dependencies check had seemed to stall, but I thought nothing of it and went to bed, assuming it would all be done in the morning. Well, I woke up about 4am, and found that it had stalled exactly where I had left it. I did something, I don't remember what, to get it started again. I remember being surprised that it did restart, and I probably should have recognized this as an ominous sign. But I went back to bed.

When I awoke later, the installation was complete and seemed to work. But only with the GNOME desktop. KDE had not been installed.  When I tried to install it, I found that there was a "broken (sound CD player) package" in it on the WD partition (maybe a residual from the earlier installation that aborted at the end), and the whole kitchen sink could not be installed until the broken one was fixed. But then the tool to fix it failed and gave up.

So now my apparent options on the Centrino are to continue using the crippled Fedora 8 without Konqueror, et al, or to reformat the partition and start over. I'm planning the latter next week if their is no shorter solution.
