Fixed-IP capability will be in NM 0.7 soon, but meanwhile, my workaround
suggestion would be to turn off NM (right-click the applet and uncheck
"enable networking"), then use System -> Administration -> Network or
Network Device Control (or ifup/ifdown) to connect to your static IP.
