Solved:

So I could mount a second disk that happened to have legacy partition
(LABEL=) name collisons I hade made an omission/typo in my edits of
/boot/grub/grub.conf. While the old kernel would boot just fine the
new kernel install based on the last bootable kernel's "template" would
not parse....

This is the zillionsth time for me where the disk partition tool was
happy to assign a LABEL= name that was not unique. I would love to
have the disk partition tool offer or allow a 'uniqprefix' for all the
partitions. This way "/" might become box01-/, and LABEL=/home might
become LABEL=box01-/home; or "LABEL=box01Mar08-/home" etc. for both
the partition map and fstab.
....i.e. operator error.
