Hi all,

Is it possible to check the type of RAM without opening up the computer?
There are several windows programs that are able to determine a lot of memory information (sisoft sandra, cpu-z, etc...), but I couldn't find a linux alternative. Does such a beast exist?

Yes, there's a few ways of checking, try dmidecode. Also lm_sensors has some support for telling you about your memory through the eeprom modules if I remember right.
