I can't help with your ATI problem, but just generic advice about
installing:  Usually {*}, if you get such error messages while
installing, the install will have aborted installing that package, and
those messages about about why it aborted.  It won't have installed, and
then complained about those problems.


* I said "usually" to not give an absolute answer that might be wrong.
But for me, I've never seen an install actually install if it complained
about conflict, it would always abort.
