Did you boot to > run level "s" ? Ok, this time I booted it by changing inittab, I got things umounted. In most cases, fsck returns code 0. But it does so instantly, and there appears to be no disk action. What is it really checking? in the case of: tmpfs .... /dev/shm it can;t find tmpfs. Thanks again for your help. Mike.
