I thought it was a kdm error and over wrote /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc with kdmrc.rpmnew init 3;init 5 and I could log in again !! I assumed that it was my old kdmrc, that yum had not replaced, that was causing the problem. Can I assume a reboot would have fixed it? pam-0.99.8.1-17.fc8.x86_64 John
