You should set mutt up to access the mailboxes directly, not via IMAP
or POP3. That will eliminate going through Dovecot (and at least one
password prompt).
Postfix is typically configured to accept mail on localhost without
going through SASL. Perhaps you already have that and just don't know
it? :)
The current mutt in F8 (mutt-1.5.17) has the ability to speak SMTP.
If you need to, you can configure it to send mail via an SMTP server
that requires authentication. See the mutt help section "SMTP
Support" for more details.
