Sounds like you have a permissions problem also! which desktop are you logging 
into (kde/gnome?) and with what (gdm/kdm?) 
Ok reading the thread your using gnome desktop and windowmaker try to use gdm

add 'prefer-ipv4=yes' to your ~/.mplayer/config to remove this useless check.
