Thanks. That's just what I needed. (I think) I'll post another reply to
let you know how it worked out... Your description of why those two are
the ones I may try disabling, was the most easily understandable
informative reply. I've seen in a long time. Thank you!

It sounds to me like I should try disabling both services. Then if
anything I care about suddenly gets broken, I'll try re-enabling
yum-updatesd.

I prefer to periodically boot into run level 3, login as root, type yum
update... Or when using Kubuntu I type apt-get upgrade the same way.
But never both in the same week.

No that would be like the chances of something blocking assigning a
working keyboard shortcut to logout which asks if ooffice document
changes need to be saved. While still letting me instantly crash the
xserver with ctrl-alt-backspace...

That could nev--- errr But come to think of it that is just whats
happened to my fc8 installation.

In neither the otherwise working pull-down
system>pref>personal>keyboardshortcuts nor in the totally non-functional
kcontrol>Regional&Accessibility>keyboardshortcuts can I successfully
assign a keyboard shortcut to the logout function that I get with
{alt}+{f1}>System>LogOut.

I have tried using something besides {ctrl}+{alt}+{del} But it just
doesn't get there. Yet God forbid I should have unsaved changes in an
important spreadsheet when I accidentally do an {ctrl}+{alt}+{backspace}
cause that shortcut still works. Go figure???

As it happens I like logging out with the three fingered salute,
confirming with an enter, wait a few seconds for my startx initialized kde
session to fall back to the virtual console login where I can, choose to
use non-X software, su -c 'yum update', or hit the same three fingered
salute my fingers are still touching to reboot...

I don't suppose that you would happen to know what would be blocking
that shortcut????
