On the other hand, they may have their computer set to associate with any open access point and not even know that they aren't on their own or one they are permitted to use. That doesn't make it legal, but when they don't understand the situation they aren't likely to change. I'd recommend using at least WEP encryption which should be easy enough to set up on your own machines. It isn't great protection but it will keep people from connecting by accident.
