I have three different cards that work in the laptop.  All with 
different chipsets.

I posted a follow up, my problem turns out to be with XFCE and not 
just the laptop.  If I start or restart the computer with XFCE 
selected as the desktop I have this problem.  If I use Gnome it 
doesn't do it.
