I don't recall where I read it, but I believe that instead of always defaulting to 96dpi, the gnome font setup now uses some heuristic to try and divine a proper dpi from the monitor size or other details. For some folks, it's made their fonts way too big. That I didn't know. I had experimented with building the freetype package with the bytecode interpreter and subpixel rendering enabled when F7 came out, but I didn't think they improved my fonts much. I actually ended up using the older freetype package from FC6. Thanks for the tip about Firefox.
