Are there any Java instructions out there which actually
provide a map for navigating Sun's web site to find "the"
rpm to download? (A walk-through for the install Java
game :-).

Here are the only instructions you need:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=254144

Translation of the above: "Sun's Java VM does not work on Fedora 8".

If you need Sun's Java, there's a good chance that the following alternative will work for you:

yum install java-1.7.0-icedtea

If you need the java plugin for firefox, also:

yum install java-1.7.0-icedtea-plugin

The IcedTea Java VM is basically Sun's Java, with a small number of non-free portions removed. Unless you need sound, or a small handful of other rarely-used features, this is probably your best chance.

Really, if this works for you, great. If not, "rpm -e" is your friend, and you haven't really wasted a great deal of time.
