I got thumbnails working by installing totem-xine from livna which
replaces regular totem, but I wasn't thrilled with that approach...
although that's mainly because I don't know how they can/should
compare and figure gstreamer plugins would probably make more sense.

I think thumbnails should "just work" if you have the right codecs
installed, but maybe totem-xine included some other dependencies.
