Hi Dave. The article in question, which is exactly on point is: http://wirelessness.wordpress.com/2007/02/07/installing-fedora-linux-on-a-de ll-optiplex-320/ The Dell Optiplex 320 boxes use sata ati sb600 chipset/controllers. Teying to load a current RHEL4/5 crashes/dies regardless of what input attributes are used when trying to install the OS. There is apparently a bug in the kernel being used, as possibly pointed out in an email from a dell mgr. (Has to do with ports being allocated when dealing with sata.) Rather than try to install the latest DVD from FC7/8, I'm trying to install the livecd for the 7.9.2 tree of FC. I've tried following the article/sites, and am at the point where I'm dealing with lilo. It appears that using grub doesn't work, as grub/install somehow seems to die when dealing with the lvm on the dell box. This has been my experience. I can't get grub to play with the dell. After everything has been installed, and I pull the livecd out of the tray, and do a reboot, so the box is booting/installing from the hard drive, the line for the kernel to be uncompressed is never displayed. The install/load process dies prior to getting there, and I can't tell where exactly as there's no displayed information... So, this is where the current issue is. If one looks through the net, you'll see a number of people have this issue with loading linux/rhel/fedora onto this particular box. The issue might be rather simple, but I can't see it as of yet. Er yuk. I think you are better of with grub. You will probably find more help here if you take the grub route... > the arcticles i've seen have indicated that grub's lvm causes issues > when installing. Did you start with a blank disk ? Or are you dual-booting or what ? DaveT. -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list
