    The problem appears to be that the device /dev/shm/ATISHM00
remains owned by the first user to login to X windows via the
gdm login box no matter how many times you logout and login as
a different user. That is, I always see...

ls -la /dev/shm
total 16
drwxrwxrwt  2 root    root       60 2007-09-19 14:01 .
drwxr-xr-x 12 root    root     4560 2007-09-25 09:58 ..
-rw-------  1 foobar1 users 1048576 2007-09-19 14:01 ATISHM00

where foobar1 is any user who is first to login to X windows.
This never changes when I log foobar1 out of X windows and 
login via the gdm login box as a second user. You wouldn't
happen to be using kde and kdm for the login box instead?
