I would think if the errors are in the filesystem then yes you are correct. I was thinking that there were bad sectors so if I copied it
 and fsck it then it would be ok.


It might be possible that both devices are sharing the same IDE controller which could make the problems with one disk seem to be effecting the other drive as well. I had an old 486 with a X2 CD burner effecting the bus and appearing as the problem was with the disk. This was on a computer with only one controller though.

Are you removing the one expected failed disk and swapping in the dd copied disk or using both disks at once on the system?
