One complaint I have against vsftpd (and most ftp servers) is that they
allow unlimited password cracking attempts. Proftpd can be configured to
limit the attempts per connection. I have set ours to 1 attempt and
protect ftp with the same iptables recent module rules that protect ssh.
As ftp (and sometimes ssh) often have many file transfers in a row, each in
separate connections, I use pam_recent to clean the recent module's list.

On our server proftpd is fast.

I want to confirm Gene Poole's post about Fedora 7
(and kernel 2.6.2x) non-support of ATAPI IOMEGA Zip Drives.
Neither Fedora 7's nor kernel.org's kernels recognize the device.

Back in Fedora Core 6 (and kernel 2.6.18), the drive was
/dev/hda (or /dev/hdb, whatever). But the best Fedora 7
can do is create /dev/sdb, unless the drive actually has
a disk inside. Then Fedora 7 creates /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb4
(or /dev/sdb1 if you have made your own Linux partition).

I have tried building several 2.6.21.3 kernels, but they all
fail to recognize the drive. Only the program, sfdisk, can
read anything from the device without generating any error
messages. The command, sfdisk -l /dev/sdb, prints out
what seems to be one good diagnostic message and a
reasonable partition table.

I did find a solution for Ubuntu users. You can Google
["mc.mauser" "update-initramfs"] (include the quotes,
omit the brackets), then scroll down to see mc.mauser's code.
This solution is good only for Ubuntu, not Fedora!

What can we do to get the attention of either the kernel
developers and/or the Fedora folks and have them look at
this problem?

Admittedly, these old Zip drives are really obsolete,
given that you can buy 8GB USB flash drives for less
than half the cost of some of the IOMEGA models. But,
it doesn't seem like the right thing to do to drop
support for a device without some advanced notice,
and surely not by just refusing to recognize it.

Hello, Everyone
This problem is so odd that it is almost embarrassing to mention. It
will almost make me sound like I must be totally clueless and incapable
of running a Linux system. But, since that is not the case, here goes.

This morning before work, I was attempting to print five sheets of a
spreadsheet that I use every Monday (on Thursday's I print out three
sheets from the exact same spreadsheet.) Up until this morning, this
has always "Just Worked."

This morning, I was only able to print the first sheet (of the five
that I needed.) Whatever I tried, I could only print the first sheet.
It isn't that I can only print one sheet, it's that I can only print
the first sheet. I tried to print other sheets with no success.

Also, I tried creating other multi sheet spreadsheets in OpenOffice.org
and KSpread. We're talking just putting one character on each of three
sheets. Same results as described above.

I recreated the spreadsheet that I attempted to print this morning by
copying and pasting all six sheets to a completely fresh
spreadsheet. You can download it here:

I had no luck finding anything out of order in any of them. That
doesn't mean that it isn't there, it just means I can't find it...

Now I am off to creating a completely new, never used user account just
for the purpose of seeing what happens when I try to print my desired
(or any, for that matter) multi sheet spreadsheet...
My version of OpenOffice.org is as follows:
OpenOffice.org 2.4.0 (SRC680_m222 Build-1)

Also, I am running KSpread compiled from KDE Branch 3.5 source. My
version of Fedora Core is FC6, fully updated and booted into the most
recent kernel update.

If you need any more information, I will be glad to oblige. All
printing has always "Just Worked" for me on Fedora Core 6. So I am no
expert when it comes to this subject :)

I still have a working Amiga on my desk. If enough people are interested, I
just might be able to record a couple of sentences (though it would require
some cablework). What is the easiest way to record sound in Fedora (with the
Sound Blaster Live card)?

Yup, in those days I was amazed that in piched up on a comma and down on a
period. A machine with 512 KB memory, booted from a floppy disk... I've never
heard of any PC talking so good. Otoh, I have yet to hear the Festival... :-)

Well, sort of... After I do a startx the screen blanks, and in nvidia driver
case, stays there (all I can do is reset the machine). In nouveau case it
does the same, but after several seconds X gets killed automatically and I
end up back in the prompt, so I don't have to reset.

I'll try that with the nv driver, to check. Nvidia driver doesn't start for
me, so I cannot compare.

I'm still running kernel 2.6.21-1.3228. Being on dial-up makes updating a bit
hard to do. But I'll mirror the repositories again on Friday when I get to
the office, bring them home on a couple of dvds, and then I'll start testing
the drivers again with a newer kernel.

my fedora-updates.repo is enabled. I am getting updates all the time.
Are you sure you are not getting this kernel from one of the testing
repos.
As far as the site above, you are right it has the 586 and the 686
kernels are there but not the i386 kernel. Which explains the problem.
Seems like a booboo in the repo.

Again there is no i386 version of the kernel listed so that is why
updating does not find it. My machine reports itself as a i386

There is an additional complexity from fc6 -> f7: the way disks are
accessed in the newer is via /dev/sdX whereas the old would be /dev/hdX
for parallel IDE disks. I imagine that the kernel in the installer also
provides a good check as to whether the machine can actually boot such a
kernel. There is good information available eg:
