Yum _should_ automagically_ point itself at 64-bit repos instead of 32-bit if you are running a 64-bit setup. If it doesn't, please post a bug report about it to https://bugzilla.redhat.com with details on the error and how to reproduce it, etc. For what it's worth, I've been running 64-bit since FC6 (now F-7 with a rawhide KVM instance) when I first acquired 64-bit capable hardware.
