Try running Skype from a terminal and see if there are any errors
    being
reported on the console. Before you go for a reboot see if there were
any errors reported in the /var/log/messages

You might get some hints from there. Personally, I have been using it
without too many issues and for about 1~2 hrs at a stretch on a call.

There is a bug filed by me on the Alasa Mixer in FC6 and F7. The thing we now have is not good. But bring up System - Preferances- Personal - Volume Control and it will show you a microphone and it might be turned off. Or you might have a second OSS mixer and if so it WILL be turned off. Turn on the mike and you will be in business.
