I use skype from the terminal and have never got any error messages./var/log/messages also does not show any errors.Moreover,I use Skype in WindowsXP for 4-5 hours without any problems...How do I configure the microphone?

Try running Skype from a terminal and see if there are any errors being
reported on the console. Before you go for a reboot see if there were
any errors reported in the /var/log/messages
You might get some hints from there. Personally, I have been using it
without too many issues and for about 1~2 hrs at a stretch on a call.
