I've not experienced that from recent updates, but similar things from
recent errors.  Some hints for the future:

You can often move a window around by holding the ALT key, clicking on
any part of the window, and dragging it around.

If you had a terminal window open, still, you might have been able to
run top, find and kill gnome-panel.  It'd restart and give you back your
menus.

Losing window borders can be down to compiz or metacity (or something
else).  You can play with them on the command line to restart.  But it
may be easier to just log out and back in again.

That didn't look good.  I wonder if you're having hard drive corruption
errors.
