How can I specify the older driver? even if it has less capabilities
the capabilities are more than sufficient for my purposes.
1. Go to System, Administration, Display
2. Click on Hardware, then Video Card: Configure
3. Choose i810 from the list

that seems to have solved the problems. I guess the other driver is
just that "experimental"
