Then is YUM the best way to get the kernel updated?

Do you mean you want to compile it?
You can get any vanilla version from www.kernel.org .
You have to say something like "make xconfig"
and then specify your configuration choices -
or get the choices in one of the distribution kernels.
Then you say "make".
Either way it is very time-consuming.
