dear Karl
this is a widespread problem with FC7. I have it on my Dell d820 and
i have concluded that I must not suspend until th eproblem is fixed.
People will point y ou to a site where you can test quirks in
pm-suspend, but I tried that and it did not help. If you go to
http://bugzilla.redhat.com, and search for "suspend resume" you wil
see a ton of bugs, some with many many informative posts.
Today in bugzilla I read about a very promising hint. Many people who
are more sophisticated than I am have gone to the trouble of
recompiling the kernel over and over to isolate the problem, and they
link it to a component "hpet", high performance time sync or something
like that. On my Dell, the problem is that the sysstem suspends,
buit it does not wake up. After putting a kernel flag hpet=disable in
grub, then the system almost resumes. It wakes up, the screen comes
to life, and it apears OK, except that the keyboard does not work.
That's a sign they are on the right track, as far as I can tell. Some
people have posted that the suspend bug has been fixed in some kernels
they are testing for FC8.
Unless you are compulsive like me, and want to waste two or three days
trying half-assed fixes posted by everybody and his uncle, I urge you
to stop and wait. You have a widespread problem and many people are
fixing it.
If you want to keep trying, you will have to post a lot more info.
Brand of alptop, kind ovf vido card, kind of network, what config
steps have you taken to deal with this. Htere is a new suspend
framework in place now, pm-suspend, and its package "pm-utils" is
apparently missing some important files, like vbetool There is a
new thing /etc/moodules.d where troublesome modules can be isolated.
Anyway, it is a hard problem and I've wasted a lot of time on it, and
I'd suggest to you to be patient and monitor the posts in this
list as well as the bugzila. . I would bet the bottom dollar that,
when it does work, there will be an outpouring of relief and thanks
messages.
Sorry for the typing. I'm using an Nokia N800 "internet tablet" and a
protable key board, and the print is so small I can barely make
it out.
good luck
pj
Hi pj, thanks for the update. I will just wait for some bug work. I must
say that the Suspend works perfect. Now the work on un-suspend can begin
:-)
I will be careful not to hit Suspend again.
