I don't think you need to use yum at all.
If you are using the same /boot you just need to make sure
that yum does not delete the old kernel,
by going to /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/installonlyn.conf
and either disable or edit it.

If you are using a new /boot you just need to copy vmlinuz... and initrd...
from FC-6 to the new system.
