be current when mounted on a different system, shouldn't they? Or is
there some particular way it has to be mounted? Are the latest versions
of the files recoverable?

I am not an expert on ext3 and differences between ext3 and ext2,
but what you describe does not sound like a journal problem. I have
supported journalled file systems on proprietary systems. Especially,
if your system was shut down cleanly, there should be no journal
entries at all.
