I use vpnc and it works fine for me. (though I'm not using F7)

it doesn't insert a kernel module that needs to be recompiled for
every new kernel.

Unless vpnc has changed the main reason one can't use it is if they
are using certificates rather than shared secrets. I really can't
imagine anyone using the cisco client by choice if they have an
option. I'd love to find out vpnc or something else would work with
certificates.
