I should add to this, that each time I've enabled selinux and gotten those floods of messages, it drops me to a shell prompt and suggests a fsck - each time I've run that, and it comes up clean

This sounds like  a labeling problem.  Have you tried to relabel the system.

touch /.autorelabel
reboot
