My log files show the BIOS RAM map after the klogd entry. Say 'last' on the terminal after you suspect a reboot. It shows which users have been logged in and out lately. I don't have UPS, but I know that the init process has a special mode for power losses. Usually, the machine is powered down as long as the UPS has power. See /etc/inittab, entries 'pf' and 'pr'.
