Some things to check: Does your processor have virtualization
extensions? Is virtualization enabled in the BIOS?

Yes and yes. I am able to succesfully create and run virtual machines
in qemu directly from the command line (using both qemu-kvm and
qemu-system-x86_64) - the issue is more with getting virt-manager to
work.
