Thanks David for pointing out the source of the problem. I added
options libata ignore_hpa=1
to my /etc/modprobe.conf file since I started the yum localupgrade
route. I will probably also need to add the line to my rawhide
installation though it does not depend upon the disk that is giving errors.
I will probably try out the
boot: linux libata.ignore_hpa=1
using the DVD to attempt installation after the update finishes via yum.
I saw the comment you added to bugzilla before sifting through the 500+
emails from the list.

That disk geometry error problem was too bad for me to bother pursuing
saving that installation. I just removed the later partitions while
booted into development using fdisk. I made an extended and two
partitions within the extended partition for swap and /. The new system
is a mess but all of /home is still intact. There is just now so many
programs that need to be reinstalled.
The updated system panicked on reboot and the Rescue mode panicked also.
I don't know if the addition to modprobe or the installer option work or
not.
