Les, you might only need to append :995 (or whatever) to your
configuration of your pop or smtp server names setting. 

I use evolution and where I have entered my "server name" I have
pop.gmail.com:995 to specify the port. Do the same with the smtp server
name. See if that works for ya using the portnums they want you to use.
