DNS from wireless ADSL router

The NetworkManager on my Laptop always retrieves the DNS IP 192.168.1.1
from the ADSL modem/router (this is of course the address of the router
itself). This seems to work fine, i.e., web browsing etc. However ssh is
very slow to log in (> 20s). If I manually replace the 192.168.1.1 by
some static DNS servers from the provider, everything works at the
expected speed. However NetworkManager always puts the retrieved number
whenever it reconnects, and I could not find a way to disable this
behaviour.
I used nslookup to make some IP->NAME and NAME->IP lookups which worked
as quickly as it should, even with 192.168.1.1 as a server.
Apparently yum is also affected.
What do ssh and yum do other than make IP<->NAME translations?
