Explanation: While there are plugins for yum to *additionally* pick kmdls for already installed kernel, kernels to be installed etc. the very first choice of the first kmdl is up to yum core. When yum wants to pick one of the kmdls that would fulfill the requirements it doesn't check on what kernel you have installed, so it may pick the wrong flavour, the wrong version etc. In order to aid yum with the very first kmdl you just tell him the proper kernel version of your *currently* running kernel.
