Try to run gcompris with the -w (window mode):

$ gcompris -w

In this way TuxPaint won't start at full screen messing with the desktop 
geometry.

Another solution is that after exiting from gcompris to a changed desktop 
geometry, just press CTRL+ALT + (KEYPAD PLUS) , to regain the original screen 
resolution.
