More appropriate for you and your father might be O'Reilly's "Running
Linux". "Linux in a Nutshell" is more of a nuts and bolts book. It's
good reference.
I like "Linux for Dummies" as a easy desk reference. I gave my father a
copy when he started using RH6 for a project.
Simple explanations but not enough details for many things.
