Yeah, the default setup is to use HAL for the printer detection and
driver assignment, but I've yet to get that to work properly. I always
go back through the graphical printer configuration tool
(system-config-printer) or the web interface (https://127.0.0.1:631 if
CUPS is running) and change it to use the USB interface directly (e.g.
"usb://EPSON/Stylus+C64 or something similar). That should fix it in
kcontrol too, I believe. Alternatively, escputil (from the gutenprint
package on F7/Devel or gimp-print on FC6) can be of assistance to you.
Check its documentation for the available options and more details on
its usage; but something like the following should get you started:

# escputil --raw-device /dev/usb/lp0 --clean-head
# escputil --raw-device /dev/usb/lp0 --nozzle-check

There is a graphical front-end for this call stylus-toolbox [1] which
has been on the packaging wishlist for some time now, but it is not
packaged as part of Fedora yet. (Any takers? ^_^)

Hope that helps.
