I have had another go at installing. First some info:
Laptop: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 6800
Wireless Hardware: D-Link DWL-G650 H/W version B2
O/S FC6 fully up to date as of 8th April 07

Trying with Madwifi 0.9.3 downloaded 7th April 07

I removed all the old madwifi stuff, and then compiled and installed without any
error messages appearing.

I made sure that /etc/modprobe.conf contained only one extra line:
alias ath0 ath_pci

Then checked that the modules were loaded OK:
[root@lapmike1 madwifi-0.9.3]# modprobe ath_pci
[root@lapmike1 madwifi-0.9.3]# lsmod|grep ath
ath_pci                93988  0
wlan                  187236  1 ath_pci
ath_hal               195536  1 ath_pci
dm_multipath           21833  0
dm_mod                 58509  2 dm_mirror,dm_multipath

The file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0 contains:
(and I have changed the ssid and key to x's to hide the info.

# Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt
# for the documentation of these parameters.
ONBOOT=no
USERCTL=yes
PEERDNS=no
TYPE=Wireless
DEVICE=ath0
HWADDR=00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ESSID=xxx
KEY='xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx restricted'
MODE=Managed
RATE=Auto
# Next line is to stop dhcp overwriting ntp.conf
# mdc 041007
PEERNTP=no
NETMASK=
DHCP_HOSTNAME=
IPADDR=
DOMAIN=
IPV6INIT=no
CHANNEL=

Now the card is plugged in and I checked the values of various parameters.

The ifconfig command gives:
ath0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
          inet addr:10.0.0.55  Bcast:10.0.0.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

          RX bytes:20320 (19.8 KiB)  TX bytes:8003 (7.8 KiB)
          Interrupt:11

Again I have removed the MAC address for security... but the MAC address under
ath0 is correct but the MAC listed under HWaddr for wifi0 is strange with
additional characters (starting D8) appearing after the initial set of correct
values.

Looking at the output from iwconfig:
ath0      IEEE 802.11g  ESSID:"xxx"  Nickname:"lapmike1"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.462 GHz  Access Point: 00:16:B6:ED:F3:08
          Bit Rate:48 Mb/s   Tx-Power:16 dBm   Sensitivity=0/3
          Retry:off   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xx   Security mode:restri
cted
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=43/94 Signal level=-37 dBm Noise level=-80 dBm
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

The ESSID and Encryption key is correct.

I cannot get any response to a ping on a name but the output for a ping to a
machine on the local network gives:

ping 10.0.0.1
PING 10.0.0.1 (10.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
>From 10.0.0.55 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
>From 10.0.0.55 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable
>From 10.0.0.55 icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable

So I do not appear to be associated even though the card has communicated and
obtained its correct ip (10.0.0.55) from dhcp - see the /var/log/messages output
below the route check next:

Also checking the route:
root@lapmike1 madwifi]# ip ro sho
10.0.0.0/24 dev ath0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.0.55
169.254.0.0/16 dev ath0  scope link
default via 10.0.0.135 dev ath0
