The X log is where I found it complaining that 135 MHz was
the max, on a line that started with the (--) "probed"
indicator, so I'm assuming what it probed was the EDID info,
but like I said, the same monitor when probed by an ATI
card coughed up 175 MHz.

Try:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and check again
