Changing

        kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20.3 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet

to

          kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20.3 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet

in my grub.conf resolved the problem kernel panic issue.
