You can do more stuff (e.g. complicated traffic shaping) using the various
open software firmware.

You might not trust the supplied firmware to not have a back door to allow
snooping of your local network traffic. The FBI wanted a similar feature
built into routers in the past (e.g. Private Doorbell), so it is not
unreasonable to expect they have at least talked to home router manufacturers
about building something into their routers.

I flashed a Buffalo WHR-G54S with DD-WRT V23SP2 last Friday. So far it seems
to work OK, but I want to investigate things more regarding traffic shaping.
One thing of note is that this version runs a 2.4 kernel. I think IMQ
is available, but I didn't find IFB, which is the new way of doing this.
I am planning on seeing if SP3 or V24 (both currently in beta) are going to
support 2.6 kernels. I didn't want to try them, as my router isn't easy
to recover if it gets bricked. By the time I am ready for more advanced stuff
that I want to test. I am hoping that there will be a firmware that uses a
2.6 kernel.
